The former Wheldale Colliery site spans 12.56 ha (31 acres) and is allocated for employment purposes. The site features open grassland with scattered trees and shrubs, as well as a former haul road running through it. The southern part of the site has railway lines, a gasometer, and embankments, while the eastern and northern parts have railway sidings, buildings, and a filled pond. The site is approximately 1 mile north east of Castleford town centre, is bordered by industrial facilities and a sewage treatment facility, and is adjacent to a country park and the Aire River.
